Although it may possibly still be available through some channels, the Are We There Yet? clue book was not used in the solution of any of these puzzles. Resources that can be used instead include a web-based anagram generator, such as the Internet Anagram Server that lets you control the number and length of words.
Are We There Yet? contains a few time-sensitive components - better results on a Pentium-class machine may be obtained by slowing down its execution by using a program such as Mo'Slo.
Saved-game files are more like status files - they get updated with the progress of the game - so be sure to exit the program and copy the appropriate .VAC saved-game file if you want to return to a fixed point in the game.
The File | Are We There Yet? menu selection shows your current progress in the game.
Jigsaw Puzzle
These puzzles are sometimes made easier by trying to match outside pieces to the sliver of border that may be visible at the sides of the puzzle. Puzzles vary in size from 27 to 99 pieces. Some puzzles may have animated overlays or changing sections - move the cursor to the upper title bar to freeze the animation. Multi-cell regions in jigsaw puzzles can be moved all at once. When solved, some jigsaws produce secondary rebus puzzles. Due to the sheer quantity of jigsaw puzzles in the game, most solutions are presented as hotlinks from this page rather than as inline images.
Word Table
Follow the instructions at the bottom of the screen to exclude words until the solution sentence is found. Use the Alt-1 and Alt-2 keystrokes to scan through the instructions.
Anagram
Words or a phrase must be unscrambled. The more difficult multiple-word puzzles have individual words jumbled using letters from the other words. Many of the puzzles involve unusual or foreign words or placenames, so anagram generators may be only of limited help in solving them.
Word Wheel
Find the two letters that go in the middle of each circle to form three words reading down, across and up. Rotate the outer rim of each circle using Alt-1 and Alt-2 keystrokes. Many incorrect combinations can be ruled out by avoiding nonsensical letter pairs at the beginning and end of words.
Word Masking
Turn on the correct five buttons out of ten to reveal a word hidden among sets of polygons. Often there appear to be two hidden words overlapping, but only one is correct. The solution notation uses an X to indicate that a button is lit and an O to indicate that it is off.
Word Camouflage
Each letter of the alphabet is used to complete 26 themed words hidden within other text.
Polyominoes
Arrange the pieces so that they fit inside the solution area and spell out a message. Some puzzles of this type have disconnected regions. Others may have an irregular solution area that limits the placement of pieces.
Letter Layering
Pick the numbers in the correct order to "construct" a phrase. Most numbers add letters to the beginning and/or end of the sequence obtained so far, but other numbers may reverse all the letters or perform specific letter substitutions. Use the Alt-U keystroke to "unstack" a number sequence.
Letter Matching
Each letter in a word clue at the bottom of the screen corresponds to one letter in the phrase to be solved. Cycle through multiple clues by using the Alt-1 and Alt-2 keystrokes.
Mazes
Negotiate your way through a maze. Some mazes have pitfalls that will transfer you to a new position in the maze (which is sometimes desirable). Other mazes have secret doors, walls or exits that appear only when you touch them. Still other mazes have limitations on where you can and cannot make turns. Solution directions are given using the abbreviations L (left), R (right), U (up) and D (down), with a digit used to indicate multiple moves in one direction. The notation R5 represents five moves to the right, for example.
Word Search
Find words hidden in an array of letters. Words may run horizontally, vertically, diagonally, or in some cases, a word may begin on a vertical or horizontal line and turn 90 degrees. Solutions are often a sequence of more than one word. Word searches are probably the most tedious type of puzzle to solve, and unfortunately there are many examples of them in the game. Solutions identify a hidden word based on the position of its starting letter and the direction in which it runs:
R: Right D: Down UR: Diagonal to the upper right LR: Diagonal to the lower right RxD: Right for x letters, then down DxR: Down for x letters, then right L: Left
Letter Drop
Fill in the missing letters in the message by using the letters in the column directly above the spaces. These difficult puzzles can be attacked by using known small words and excluding impossible letter combinations.
Simon Says
Click on the shapes in the order they're flashed. It may be necessary to slow down the game more in order to observe the sequences. These puzzles randomize every time they're played, so no fixed solution exists. Most sequences have a final length of eight shapes, and usually at least one shape is repeated in the sequence. To view the sequence obtained so far, click on an incorrect shape.
Crossword
The traditional crossword puzzle made more difficult by having only a few word crossings. Sometimes solution words have a similar theme.
Cryptogram
A letter substitution puzzle. Solving for shorter words and observing the effects of changes may make solutions easier. Phrases are usually too short to reliably show traditional statistical letter distributions.
Word Array
Arrange the letters so that words are created in rows and columns. One or more letters may be fixed in position. These are very difficult puzzles to solve, but one or more words may relate to the "theme" of the puzzle.
Hangman Game
The familiar hangman game in which a word must be guessed one letter at a time. Incorrect letters cause a figure to gradually change. Since a failure to guess the word before a set number of incorrect letters just resets the game with the same word, solutions are trivial.
A new game starts with an initial 6 x 7 jigsaw puzzle of a United States map. This puzzle must be solved in order to access the menu system for the individual state puzzles:
The initial screen for each state contains some background information on it, such as the name of its capital, when it entered the Union, the origin of its name and points of interest in the state.
When each state puzzle is completed, a token for the Final Puzzle is produced. Some states' puzzles may become accessible only when all puzzles for another state are completed. Because of these dependencies, we have arranged the state puzzles in groups. All puzzles in a group are accessible when the preceding group has been completed.
Vermont's Blanche and Bill's Pancake House is the only state puzzle that does not produce a second token for the Final Puzzle. That way, the Final Puzzle could have the more regular dimensions of 9 rows x 11 columns instead of being based on a rectangle of 100 tokens.

and the game is over.
Car games are optional activities not required to complete the game. The first (under the T pull-down menu) is the childhood classic Lines and Boxes, a two-player game the object of which is to form more squares than your computer opponent. The second car game (under the R pull-down menu) is the familiar Concentration type game in which the goal is to remove pairs of matching symbols. Slowing down the game may produce a more enjoyable play.
The third car game (under the A pull-down menu) is 33-hole Peg Solitaire. With the positional notation
